TRACES: DARK CLOUDS | EXHIBITION OF PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN TEH

Award-winning photographer Ian Teh’s latest work, TRACES: dark clouds is currently on display at Harvard’s Fairbank Center as part of our Environment in Asia series. The exhibition runs from January 15, 2017 to February 15, 2017, with a special presentation by the photographer at the Fairbank Center on January 30, 2017 at 4pm.

Dr. Nancy Berliner, the Wu Tung Curator of Chinese Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston will talk about the life of Yin Yu Tang and its international preservation in the Peabody Essex Museum.

Beginning with a consideration of the history and meaning of the term “religion of images,” this presentation reconsiders certain aspects of this story. Examining the way that sacred icons and their worship are discussed in literary sources, Dr. Eric Greene suggests that image worship was, in fact, not generally perceived as a distinctly Buddhist or non-Chinese practice. Ironically, image worship was first represented as a “foreign” practice only long after it had already become a part of most forms of Chinese religion.
